Master Duel: Rule Book: Part 4: Better understand the "Forgetting" phenomenon of cards - Master Duel

I'm sure that for newbies, after experiencing Master Duel, they will inevitably panic when there are cases where the effects of monsters cannot be used temporarily. So, let YGO Vietnam help you!

overview

Once a monster has been Summoned, it begins to carry all sorts of information, such as:
  • Its Summon Time.
  • How exactly was it Summoned?
  • The effects are applied to it.
  • Etc
When a monster stops being face-up for a period of time, it will " forget " that information, but " remember " other parts. This can happen when it is turned face down by the Book of Moon or temporarily banished by Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss .

If the monster is temporarily face down

If your monster is temporarily face-down (under the effects of Book of Moon or Subterror), it will forget:

  • Any properties that the cards used to Summon (Tribute, use materials, special summon, etc.) have at the time of Summon.
  • Any effects previously applied.
However, it will not forget :
  • Which specific cards were used to Summon it.
  • Whether it is Special Summoned or not.
  • Whether it is Summoned that turn or not.

Naturia Bamboo Shoot (Example 1)

EARTH 5

  • ATK:

  • 2000

  • DEF:

  • 2000

If this card is Tribute Summoned by Tributing a "Naturia" monster, while this card remains face-up on the field, your opponent cannot activate Spell or Trap Cards.

If face-down , Naturia Bamboo Shoot will forget whether or not it Tribute Summoned a Naturia Monster. From there, its continuing effect will be interrupted .

Onslaught of the Fire Kings (Example 2)

UR Rarity

Spell Normal

If your opponent controls a monster and you control no monsters: Special Summon 1 FIRE Beast, Beast-Warrior, or Winged Beast monster from your Deck. Its effects are negated, also it is destroyed during the End Phase. You can only activate 1 "Onslaught of the Fire Kings" per turn.

From there, some monsters will receive some benefits , such as: Monsters Summoned by Onslaught of the Fire Kings will not be destroyed if they are face-down and then turned face-up before the End Phase.

Stardust Dragon and De-Synchro (Example 3)

1 Tuner + 1+ non-Tuner monsters When a card or effect is activated that would destroy a card(s) on the field (Quick Effect): You can Tribute this card; negate the activation, and if you do, destroy it. During the End Phase, if this effect was activated this turn (and was not negated): You can Special Summon this card from your GY.

    R Rarity
    De-Synchro

    Spell Normal
    De-Synchro

Target 1 Synchro Monster on the field; return that target to the Extra Deck, then, if all of the monsters that were used for the Synchro Summon of that monster are in your GY, you can Special Summon all of them.

Another example of not being affected by being flipped face down :
      • If a Stardust Dragon is turned face down, then face up, and is targeted by De-Synchro , you can still Special Summon its summoning materials.

      Obelisk the Tormentor (Example 4)

      • DEF:

Requires 3 Tributes to Normal Summon (cannot be Normal Set). This card's Normal Summon cannot be negated. When Normal Summoned, cards and effects cannot be activated. Neither player can target this card with card effects. Once per turn, during the End Phase, if this card was Special Summoned: Send it to the GY. You can Tribute 2 monsters; destroy all monsters your opponent controls. This card cannot declare an attack the turn this effect is activated.

Or an Obelisk the Tormentor that is turned face down and then turned over again will still be sent to the GY during the End Phase (Special Summoning Effect).

Book of Eclipse and Yosenju Kama 1 (Example 5)

Change all face-up monsters on the field to face-down Defense Position. During the End Phase of this turn, change as many face-down Defense Position monsters your opponent controls as possible to face-up Defense Position, then your opponent draws cards equal to the number of monsters changed face-up by this effect.

        R Rarity
        Yosenju Kama 1

        Yosenju Kama 1
        Yosenju Kama 1
        WIND 4
        Yosenju Kama 1
        • ATK:

        • 1600

        • DEF:

        • 500

If this card is Normal Summoned, you can: Immediately after this effect resolves, Normal Summon 1 "Yosenju" monster from your hand, except "Yosenju Kama 1". If you control another "Yosenju" monster: You can target 1 face-up card your opponent controls; return it to the hand. This effect can only be used once while this card is face-up on the field. Once per turn, during the End Phase, if this card was Normal Summoned this turn: Return it to the hand.

Yosenju Kama 1 - or any "Yosenju" monster - turned face-up by Book of Eclipse will return to the hand during the End Phase if Normal Summoned that turn.

Additionally, there is some difference between monsters being temporarily overturned or temporarily banished.

If a monster is turned face down

        It will forget :
        • Where is it Summoned from?
        • If it is Pendulum Summoned.
        • The exact method used to Summon it.
However, it will not forget :
        • If its Battle Position has changed that turn.
        • If it has attacked that turn.

Shaddoll Fusion and Number 39: Utopia (Example 1)

Fusion Summon 1 "Shaddoll" Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, using monsters from your hand or field as Fusion Material. If your opponent controls a monster that was Special Summoned from the Extra Deck, you can also use monsters in your Deck as Fusion Material. You can only activate 1 "Shaddoll Fusion" per turn.

          • 2000

2 Level 4 monsters When a monster declares an attack: You can detach 1 material from this card; negate the attack. If this card is targeted for an attack, while it has no material: Destroy this card.

If you Summon Number 39: Utopia , place it face down, then flip it over, your opponent MAY NOT send a monster from the Deck to use for Shaddoll Fusion .

          Beast King Barbaros (Example 2)

          SR Rarity
          Beast King Barbaros

          • ATK:

          • 3000

          • DEF:

You can Normal Summon/Set this card without Tributing, but its original ATK becomes 1900. You can Tribute 3 monsters to Tribute Summon (but not Set) this card. If Summoned this way: Destroy all cards your opponent controls.

Beast King Barbaros is Summoned by its own effect if turned face down, then face up will have an initial ATK of 3000.

If that card is temporarily banished

          It will not forget :
          • Where is it Summoned from?
          • If it is Pendulum Summoned.

Shaddoll Fusion and Number 39: Utopia (For example)

            • DEF:

            • 2000

2 Level 4 monsters When a monster declares an attack: You can detach 1 material from this card; negate the attack. If this card is targeted for an attack, while it has no material: Destroy this card.

If you Summon Number 39: Utopia , and temporarily banish it, your opponent CAN still send monsters from the Deck to use on Shaddoll Fusion when it returns to the field.
