Master Duel - Rule Book: Phần 9 - "Soft" Once per Turn & "Hard" Once per Turn

Hello everyone, we are back with some general knowledge that we may have forgotten during Duel. This time it will be about " Once per turn " knowledge!

This part is extremely important for Duelists who often skim over the text on the card! Because sometimes you will encounter situations that make us confused such as: the opponent can use "Once per turn" countless times in one turn :D Oh...! So let's take a look at this article to see why!

overview

You may already know that some cards have "Once per Turn" effects - Once per turn. But have you noticed that some cards only have a simple Once per Turn while others have longer effects? - Example: "You can only use this effect of *card name* Once per Turn" . Or when you see a card reactivate its effect even though it has a Once per Turn effect? Well, actually both are different types of Once per Turn in the game (regardless of format). And what is the difference between them? Let's find out with YGO Vietnam !

"Soft" Once per Turn

The obvious sign is usually the line "Once per Turn" at the beginning of the sentence . It's called "Soft" because if you summon / have another copy of that same card on the field or make it leave the field and then summon that same card again, you can use that card's effect again. It. In other words, you can understand this type of One per Turn as once for each copy of a card . Additionally, if a card with the Soft Once per Turn effect leaves the field, and you later have a way to Summon it again, it will be treated as a new copy of that card, so you can reuse that effect. Some examples worth mentioning are Lonefire Blossom or Gladiator Beast Tamer Editor .

The simplest identification sign is the words " Once per Turn " at the beginning of the sentence and the name of the card itself does not appear in that line itself . Thanks to writing such an effect, we can take advantage of that card's ability many times with many different copies.

Applying Soft Once per Turn, we can also take advantage of Zeus' OP ability and summon Zeus countless times, if:
  • In your Extra Deck there are many copies of Zeus and on the field there are more than 1 Xyz monster fought => You can sum more than 1 copy of Zeus onto the field (unfortunately, it is limited to 1 so this dream can temporarily put aside)
  • If Zeus has used a second effect (attach card) and Zeus has left the field, and you can manage to summon Zeus back to the field, for example using Monster Reborn . That second effect can still be used again .

Hard Once per Turn

Its obvious sign is usually the phrase "You can only use this effect/each effect of *card name* once per turn" . This is a bit more intense since you can only use that effect once and can't use it again in the same turn, even if you summon another copy of itself . There are a lot of cards that have this clause in their effects, and I'm pretty sure you're familiar with it.

There are also some differences between "This" and "Each".
  • "This" means that the effect is only Hard Once per Turn while another effect can be used multiple times in the same turn, like Auram the World Chalice Blademaster or Marincess Marbled Rock .
  • "Each" means you can use all of that card's effects in one turn but only once in that turn, a lot of cards have that card's effect so there won't be an example needed here

If the card has the word "Each" appearing right in the words Once per Turn - that means you can use all of the card's effects but only once per turn and 1 copy!

If the card has the word "This" appearing right in the words Once per Turn - that means you can only use that effect once in 1 turn.

Other "Hard" Once per Turn types

  • Hard Once per Turn between both effects: This often happens in some cards with 2 or more effects . Its notables are the same as regular Hard Once per Turn, except that it has "effect 1 *card name* per turn" instead of "this effect/per turn of" and also has the following clause "and only once that turn" . This means that in addition to Once per Turn, even if a card has 2 or more effects, you are only allowed to use 1 effect of that card in 1 turn, and must wait until the next turn to use the remaining effect. Some examples are Swordsoul Grandmaster - Chixiao , Appliancer Vacculephant or Elemental HERO Shadow Mist
  • "You can only activate 1 *card name* Once per Turn" . There's no difference, except that these are Spell/Trap cards. However, there is a special case where you can activate multiple copies of a card with this restriction, we will talk about this case in the next article.

If you pay attention, you can see the words "...use 1 *card name* effect per turn, and only once that turn" - Meaning you can only use 1 eff of this card and only 1 eff among the countless inherent effs of that card.
